Chinese scientists try to use traditional Chinese medicine to treat dementia or develop an example of traditional Chinese medicine

Chinese scientists borrowed three ingredients from traditional Chinese medicine, a 3,000-year-old method designed to regulate the flow of energy in the body, and used modern pharmaceutical technology to formulate a cure for dementia, media reported on Tuesday. There is no cure for dementia.
According to the Bloomberg News Agency website on September 27, the formula contains ginkgo biloba leaves, ginseng and saffron extract. The drug name is Salutone. The drug will enter an advanced phase of research this month in Melbourne, Australia, and a larger clinical trial to test its efficacy will be launched later this year in China.
The herbal mixture offers an untrodden path to a failed field of research, the report said. If he succeeds, he may bring in the first approved drug to treat vascular dementia. Vascular dementia is an age-related brain degradation disorder similar to Alzheimer's disease. The researchers hope that the significance of developing the drug can go beyond the treatment of dementia. They seek to test a new method that can achieve innovation in the pharmaceutical field. This new method combines the ancient wisdom of traditional drugs with the scientific rigour of modern drug development.
"If we succeed in treating vascular dementia, it will be a good example of how to develop other Chinese medicines," said Zhanghuajian, director of clinical research at China Shenwei Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd. in Beijing. "
In the case of serotone, the researchers identified and described the biological activity of each ingredient, and then studied a variety of combinations to determine the best formula, the report said.
According to Liujianxun, inventor of the drug and director of the Xiyuan Hospital Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, each capsule contains 10 active ingredients. Liu and his colleagues documented how and where each ingredient was absorbed by the body, as well as its effects and mechanisms.
Ginkgo leaves are being used to improve neurocognition, says Dennis Zhang, a clinical Pharmacologist at the National Institute of Complementary Medicine at the University of Western Sydney and lead researcher at the final stage of research in Australia. The benefits of ginseng, a "magic herb", include improved memory and responsiveness. He said saffron is a spice used by Chinese to season chicken soup and has long been known to promote blood circulation and depression.
Zhangshuo, in serotone, aims to improve blood circulation and perfusion in the brain, reduce inflammation and enhance communication between brain cells.
In vascular dementia, brain cells are killed by minor strokes and other damage that hinder oxygen supply, leading to changes in memory, thinking and behavior, the report said. Although dead neurons can not recover, the goal of the drug is to maintain or even enhance brain function by improving the network connecting healthy cells. The drug also has the same benefits for other forms of dementia, because the researchers found through autopsy that a large number of dead patients had vascular changes in their brains.
Zhangshuo: "We never said we were going to try to find a cure, but the progression of the disease is going to slow down dramatically -- that's the hope. "
In a 16-week study of 17 patients with vascular dementia who were taking serotone, researchers used single-photon computed tomography to study changes in the brain's blood circulation, he said. They found improvements in areas where they controlled cognition, language comprehension, and working memory. This supports the findings of a mid-term study conducted in China, which found that cerotone improves cognitive and daily functioning in patients with mild to moderate dementia.
"It's a promising study," said cognitive neuroscientist Aimi·buluoteman, director of the vascular neurodegenerative research laboratory at the Flory Institute of Neurology and Mental Health in Melbourne. "
