Calcium deficiency on the elderly heart

Previous studies have taught us that calcium has the effect of preventing cardiovascular disease. Such as postmenopausal women calcium can provide high-density lipoprotein, reduce low-density lipoprotein; calcium and digestive tract fatty acids and cholic acid combined, thereby inhibiting fat absorption; calcium can also lower blood pressure, weight loss. But recently, a team led by Professor Reid of the University of Auckland School of Medicine in New Zealand found that calcium supplementation in older women could increase the incidence of cardiovascular disease.

A total of 1471 healthy postmenopausal women participated in the study, with an average age of 74 years. Of which 732 daily calcium 1 gram, 739 taking placebo. The study lasted for five years. The results showed that the number of myocardial infarction occurred in the calcium supplementation group and the control group was 45 times and 19 times respectively. The incidence of total cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke and sudden death) was 101 and 54 respectively, the difference was very significant The

Although the researchers say that this is not the final conclusion, but they still think that older women should be careful calcium. If there is no obvious bone loss and fracture of the susceptible factors, it is best not to calcium.
