Vitamin B overdose may cause lung cancer

2017-08-24 Xinhua News Agency

Xinhua news agency, Washington, August 22 Xinhua (reporter Lin Xiaochun) the United States the "Journal of clinical oncology published 22 according to a new study, men at risk for developing long-term large doses of vitamin B6 and B12 supplements of lung cancer will increase significantly, the risk is particularly serious in smokers.
Vitamin B6 and B12 have long been thought to increase energy, promote metabolism, and reduce cancer risk. But researchers at the Ohio State University and other institutions tracked more than 77 thousand American adults for more than 10 years and found that if a large amount of vitamin B6 and B12 supplements were used, the effect might be the opposite.
The study found that if men took more than 20 mg of vitamin B6 supplements per day, or more than 55 micrograms of vitamin B12, they would have doubled the risk of lung cancer in 10 years. If they smoke, then their risk is 3 to 4 times higher than the average person.
At present, the United States agencies recommend that the maximum daily intake of vitamin B6 for men is 1.5 mg, while vitamin B12 is 2.4 micrograms.
Theodore Brasc, of the Ohio State University in charge of the study, points out that the amount of vitamin B supplements sold in the market is far above the recommended dosage. In fact, people can get enough vitamin B by eating meat, beans and cereals, so many people don't need to take large amounts of vitamin B supplements, and they don't need to be used all year round.
