Taking drugs to increase "good cholesterol" protects against cardiovascular disease

The 2017-11-17

Source: health report

Report from our correspondent (reporter zhang lei) the us local time, on November 15, published in the journal of the American medical association cardiovascular research results confirmed that the new international cooperation always in drug research and development, by trying to block cholesterol ester transfer protein (a key to affect the human body cholesterol metabolism proteins) activity to increase the "good cholesterol" levels, reducing cardiovascular disease risk of difficult to achieve. In other words, lowering the activity of cholesterol esters through drugs improves the "good cholesterol" level and has no protective effect on the cardiovascular system. The findings are based on a prospective genetic study of 150,000 adults in China.

There are two different types of cholesterol in the blood: low density lipoprotein cholesterol, which is considered bad cholesterol; The other category is HDL cholesterol, which is considered "good cholesterol". It has been confirmed that lowering the "bad cholesterol" by statins and other lipo-lowering drugs can significantly reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. One of the many ways to improve the "good cholesterol" level is to block or inhibit the activity of cholesterol esters, said Chen, a tenured professor at Oxford University. However, from a genetic perspective, there is no causal relationship between the drug target and the disease.

From Oxford University, Peking University and Chinese academy of medical sciences, the researchers worked together, analyzed that influences the activity of cholesterol ester transfer protein known multiple gene locus mutation associated with different diseases. During the 10 years of follow-up, there were more than 5000 cases of coronary heart disease and 19,000 stroke cases. The analysis found that the gene locus of cholesterol esters had significantly increased the "good cholesterol" level, but did not reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (such as stroke). However, there is a correlation between the gene locus of cholesterol esters and the risk of eye disease, suggesting that the inhibition of cholesterol esters may lead to eye disease. The findings are consistent with previous studies of eye disease genetics reported in east Asia and the west.

Chen Zhengming said, before start mass drug development and clinical trials, available population genetics method first prediction research, predict therapeutic effect and side effects of new drugs, and thus effectively reduce development costs, improve the success rate of r&d.
