A new study from the university of Athens school of medicine in Greece shows that vitamin D can help obese children lose weight.




The researchers enrolled 232 obese children, 117 of whom took daily vitamin D capsules and 115 who received a placebo. At the end of the 12-month study, the scientists found that the children in the vitamin D group lost weight, had lower body fat and had more normal cholesterol levels than those in the placebo group.




Researchers say a major reason why children are overweight or obese is a lack of key minerals and vitamins in their diet. As many as 70 percent of children in the United States have low levels of vitamin D. Study lead author Dr. Ivan jerry said, to prevent and fight against the problem of the most reliable method is a balanced diet and exercise plan, let the children eat fish and milk and other foods rich in vitamin D, often outdoors in the sunshine, or a moderate amount of vitamin D supplements can have very good effect, make the overweight and obese children in adulthood severe lower risk of heart disease and metabolic complications.
